MBBC Adult Badminton

Badminton at MBCC is competitive but cordial. Players range from beginners to internationally ranked. The five courts are dedicated and built for badminton play and are among the best available. New players are always welcome regardless of their skill level.

  1. Membership: The adult badminton program is open to all members of the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.
  2. Guests:
    • Regular Members are permitted to bring three guests to play badminton for a fee of $4 before 8:00 PM (Junior playing time) and $10.00 after 8:00 PM (adult playing time). A sign-in roster is posted at the entrance to the courts.
    • Visiting International players are the guests of the board of directors.
  3. Hours: The courts are open for play during all hours except those reserved for the junior badminton program (generally 6-8pm Mon-Thur, 4-6 Fri, 10am-1pm Sat). The 8-10pm hours have been designated for adults as follows:
    • Monday: Beginner players have priority
    • Tuesday & Thursday: Intermediate players have priority
    • Wednesday: Advanced players have priority
    • Friday: Open
  4. Court time: Except as noted above, courts are not reserved. If all courts are occupied the following rules apply:
    • Players waiting for a court must wait on a “first come, first served” basis.
    • Doubles play has priority over singles play. If members are waiting to play, players engaged in a singles match should complete the game and offer to play doubles or vacate the court to players wishing to play doubles.
    • Two games may be played before vacating the court.
  5. Adult Badminton Chairperson: The MBBC board includes an Adult Badminton Chairperson whose charter is to manage all adult badminton activities of MBBC in accordance with the policies established by the board. These include establishing adult badminton tournaments, and overseeing playing members. The chairperson is elected to the board in the same manner as all MBBC board members.
  6. Playing Members: MBBC has a member category designed to promote badminton and to elevate the level of play at the club. The individuals in this category are designated “Playing Members”.
    • Qualifications: Individuals eligible to be playing members are active tournament players or are actively involved in badminton activities such as the Southern California Badminton Association. There are two classes of Playing Members: Regular & Senior; seniors are women age 35 or over and men age 40 and over.
    • Selection: The applicants for playing members are selected by the Badminton Chairman and appointed by majority vote of the MBBC Board.
    • Applications: An application form and a MBBC rule acknowledgement form must be completed prior to an individual being appointed.
    • Tenure: Appointment as a playing member is for a period of six months. The MBBC board is to review the qualifications and playing status of each Playing member at six-month intervals.
    • Fees: Playing Members pay the following upon appointment:
      • $25 nonrefundable admission fee
      • $50 refundable security deposit
      • $25 refundable key deposit
      • $30 for first month dues
    • Obligations: Playing Members are subject to all the rules of the club. They do not have neither voting privileges, nor own stock nor serve as officers or on the board.
    • Club Service: Each Playing Member is required to complete three workday credits per year. Failure to meet the service obligations will result in a monetary assessment.
  7. Badminton rules: Badminton play at MBBC is governed by the American Badminton Association rules.
  8. Attire: No shirts, hard-soled shoes, swimming suits: No play
  9. Badminton Lessons: Coach Wei Zhong conducts individual one-half hour training sessions Monday and Tuesday evenings from 8-10pm . Sign-ups for the month are posted on the bulletin board on the courts. There is no charge. The coach is also available for private lessons. He can be contacted for price and availability.
